Taiwan APUA-Taiwan was founded in June of 2002. Antibiotics are widely used in Taiwan’s community healthcare settings, hospitals, and in animal husbandry. Antibiotic resistance is prevalent. The chapter aims to restrict antibiotic use in medical and agricultural fields and provide more information to consumers on the impact of antimicrobial resistance on public health. Its members were drawn from the Infectious Disease Society of Republic of China, boasting more than 500 members. Prior to the founding of APUA-Taiwan, the Society held multiple symposia on antibiotic resistance. Taiwanese scientists and clinicians have also designed a nationwide surveillance system to detect resistance called SMART (Surveillance from Multicenter Antimicrobial Resistance in Taiwan), which collects data from fourteen participating hospitals since 2000.
