Major Academic Affiliates
Tufts is affiliated with a diverse group of teaching hospitals across Massachusetts and one in Maine. Included among these are our major academic affiliates: Tufts Medical Center, Baystate Medical Center, Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Faulkner Hospital, Lahey Clinic, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Tufts Medical Center: Located adjacent to the School of Medicine, Tufts Medical Center is a world class, 415-bed academic medical institution that is home to both a full-service hospital for adults and the Floating Hospital for Children. State-of-the-art diagnostic technology, modern facilities for inpatient and outpatient services and dedicated medical professionals who focus on patient-centered care have helped establish Tufts Medical Center's reputation as one of the country's leading medical centers. All full time Tufts Medical Center's physicians hold faculty appointments at Tufts.
Baystate Medical Center: Located in Springfield, Mass., Baystate is the western campus of the School of Medicine. A major academic affiliate of Tufts, Baystate is a 600-bed tertiary care referral center for much of western Massachusetts. The hospital serves a population of nearly one million people and is recognized as a leading academic medical center. Baystate is the only major teaching affiliate of Tufts that offers third year medical students the option of completing the entire third year clerkship curriculum at one hospital.
Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center: A 400-bed, full-service medical center in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston. The Medical Center, which provides a broad spectrum of medical services as well as comprehensive teaching and research programs, admits more than 15,500 inpatients each year and provides approximately 250,000 ambulatory visits, including more than 270,000 emergency room visits.
Faulkner Hospital: A non-profit community teaching hospital located in Jamaica Plain, Boston. Its modern facilities house 140 acute care beds, 12 operating rooms, and extensive ancillary and outpatient services. Inpatient services include internal medicine, cardiology, psychiatry, pulmonary, orthopedics, gastroenterology, general/GI surgery, and a dedicated addiction recovery service. In addition, Faulkner Hospital has several specialty programs of national renown including the Faulkner-Sagoff Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Centre and the Faulkner Breast Centre.
Lahey Clinic Medical Center: A 317-bed tertiary care facility supported by an extensive network of community-based primary care practices. The hospital's facilities include an ambulatory care center that serves more than 3,000 patients each day. The Lahey Clinic, which includes the Medical Center, is the largest multispecialty group practice in New England with over 70 physician practice locations. Last year, Lahey Clinic surgeons performed more than 19,000 surgeries and the Emergency department received more than 50,000 patient visits.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital: The Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a 236 bed community teaching hospital serving the western suburban communities of Boston. Its emergency department has more than 40,000 patient visits annually. It has coronary and intensive care units with direct and remote monitoring capability, state-of-the-art surgical suites, automated clinical laboratory facilities, technologically advanced facilities in radiology, including an on site MRI unit, and a comprehensive medical library and teaching facilities. An extensive teaching program is directed toward all levels of professional education and includes regularly scheduled staff conferences, grand rounds, and specialty rounds.
Role of the Tufts Affiliated Teaching Hospitals
The Tufts University School of Medicine has an outstanding and diverse group of affiliated clinical teaching sites.
The above institutions and others fulfill clinical teaching needs by participating in one or more of the educational program components: introduction to physical diagnosis; required clerkships; elective clerkships; or special clinical educational activities.
Required Third-Year Clerkships
Required clerkships are available at these institutions. Students rotate to one or another of these institutions for a given clerkship experience.
