MD/MBA in Health Management

The Brandeis Heller School for Social Policy & Management is responsible for our MBA curriculum. All coursework will be provided by Brandeis and Tufts exclusively and students completing the program will receive a Heller Master of Business Administration degree, which is accredited by the AACSB. The Program will continue to deliver both degrees in four years.

The business of health care is a critical feature of medicine today.

To prepare physicians to be leaders in health care management, Tufts created the combined M.D./M.B.A. in Health Management program in 1994. Since that time, 130 students have graduated with the combined degree and are pursuing a spectrum of clinical and leadership interests.

Tufts Medical school is known for its combined-degree programs. In 1994, the school already had well established M.D./PhD. and M.D./M.P.H. programs. Since then, the medical school has created three more dual-degree programs, combining an M.D. degree with degrees in engineering, law and diplomacy. The intense, simultaneous study of medicine, business, and health care systems allows for integration of perspectives and data that otherwise would be difficult to achieve.

Pioneering hallmarks of the Tufts' program--now one of more than 50 M.D./M.B.A. programs offered by United States medical schools--include its four-year timeframe, partnership with an AACSB accredited institution, and emphasis on exposing students on working health care managers.

To improve our MD/MBA program, we have recently undertaken a major reorganization of our curriculum. Our first summer now begins in late June and will center around a Major Field Experience at one of Boston's finest health care institutions. While continuing to take courses in management basics at Brandeis University, students will spend nearly half their time working with executives and managers in a hands-on exploration of cutting edge health care.

ADMISSIONS

MD/MBA applicants may apply via the online TUSM secondary application at any time during the application cycle. (Space is limited in the program so applying early is recommended.) Students are reviewed by the MBA committee after they are offered admission to the medical school. Please note that the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is not required for admission to the MD/MBA program. During the first summer, students are required take the GMAT (if not already taken) as a condition of their full matriculation at Brandeis University. Test scores will be sent directly to the Heller School by GMAC, Graduate Admissions Council. The GMAT code for The Heller School at Brandeis University is 3FD-ZX-31.
