Do you wish to become expert in the increasingly important field of pain? Do you want to update your practice or institution to make it compliant with emerging standards for pain assessment and treatment? Are you interested in helping to shape public health policy to recognize that access to pain treatment is a fundamental human right? Graduates of our program apply their new-found knowledge in diverse career paths or as the basis to successfully apply for advanced graduate, medical or other degrees. Our afternoon and evening classes allow you to pursue your studies without interrupting your career.

Our program is the first and only multidisciplinary postgraduate pain curriculum of its kind in the United States. Our innovative 5-credit Certificate (C-PREP) and 11-credit Master of Pain Research, Education and Policy (MS-PREP) programs offer an unmatched opportunity to study with an experienced multidisciplinary faculty. Our curriculum addresses topics such as the ethical and sociocultural aspects of pain, palliative care, end of life issues, public policy, legislative issues, communication, research methods, and advocacy, along with clinical issues and the neurochemistry of pain.

The program offers a small, interactive environment with internationally renowned faculty and clinicians to allow for optimal advanced learning. Started in 1999, it was developed by two pain experts: an anesthesiologist/internist (me!) and a sociologist; this diversity is reflected in our comprehensive curriculum. Our global student body is an intellectually stimulating community of peers with wide-ranging personal and professional interests. Faculty and students are united by a deep commitment to applying the most rigorous standards of knowledge and evidence to alleviate the suffering of others.

Pain science has progressed dramatically in the past decade and Tufts University School of Medicine is proud to have prominent leaders in this influential field take part in the education of our students.
