Dr. Gagandeep Kang

Christian Medical College, Vellore,TN, India

Gagandeep Kang, MD, FRCPath, PhD is Professor of the Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. She is Vice-Principal (Dean) of CMC for research.

In recent years, she has focused her research efforts on enteric infections in children, with a view to determining modes of transmission and immune responses in order to rationally design effective interventions. She has carried out molecular characterization of enteric parasites (Cryptosporidium spp.), viruses (calciviruses) and bacteria (Escherichia coli) to identify potential zoonotic infections resulting in genetic reassortment and inter-species spread. Her current studies include active hospital and community based surveillance utilizing new molecular assays to investigate immune responses in children with viral and parasitic enteric infections in South India.

In 2006, she received the National Award for Women Bioscientists for her significant contributions in molecular epidemiology of rotaviral diarrhoeal diseases in children. She has also received International Honorary appointments as Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (Baltimore, MD) and Adjunct Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston, MA).
