Not willing to risk the re-establishment of normal hepatic function so soon after much valiantly fought Spring Break and post-Match endeavors, 13 stalwart Tufts medical students (and, allegedly, one particularly antisocial cat) assembled on the evening of March 29, 2004 at the luxury Château d'Ewall, in exotic Brookline Village, for the first Tufts Wine Club Annual Tasting. Greeting our approaching sommeliers-in-training from the third floor penthouse suite, sultry music wafted down from the hi-fi to combine with the delicate bouquet of freshly baked white chocolate, macadamia, and cranberry cookies.
One arrived upstairs to find the table spread to near-bursting with fine Manchego and triple-cream Brie cheeses, teeming with Spanish almonds and fresh strawberries, and laden with the finest wine glasses to be found in the neighbors' stemware cabinet on short notice. With the capable direction and thorough lecture notes of wine connoisseur Frank Scarangella, the subtle pleasures of the vine were insightfully unfolded: from the graceful sensibilities of an Alsatian Gewürztraminer to the oaky vanilla notes of a Cali Chardonnay and through the buoyant acidity of a Florentine Chianti and an Aussie Shiraz, discussion progressed from the most fundamental of contemplations (à la 'Why is a wine clearly from eastern France called something so decidedly German as Gewürztraminer'?) to the sublime (e.g., 'Wait, so slurping – cool or not cool?'), and, indeed, even to the most transcendent of meditations (i.e. 'Hey, are there any more cookies?') by eve's end. Truly, there is no purer elixir than the comforting assurance of the antioxidant good works being done in the bloodstream by the grace of red wine polyphenols. We do hope you join us next year.
