About Neurosurgery at Tufts-New England Medical CenterTufts-New England Medical Center is a world-class, academic medical institution in Boston, and is home to two full-service hospitals, one serving adults and The Floating Hospital for Children dedicated exclusively to all levels of pediatric care. The Medical Center is also the principal teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, and pioneers groundbreaking research including numerous clinical trials available exclusively at Tufts-NEMC.
Tufts-New England Medical Center is located in downtown Boston, adjacent to the city’s Theater District and Chinatown. Tufts-NEMC’s state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, modern facilities for inpatient and outpatient services and dedicated medical professionals have helped establish the Medical Center as one of the country’s leading medical institutions.
Boston’s First Full Service HospitalIn 1992, with the addition of a maternity service, Tufts-NEMC became the first private, full-service hospital in Boston. Tufts-New England Medical Center now features the entire complement of adult, maternity and pediatric services in a single location, as well as on-sight access to ongoing clinical research. Tufts-NEMC’s ability to provide services to adults and children in a single location enables integration of care and sets Tufts-NEMC apart from other academic medical centers.
Superlative Treatment and CareTufts-NEMC’s physicians and services have been rated among the best in the nation in a number of comparative surveys, and compassionate, patient-centered care is one of the Medical Center’s hallmarks. A multidisciplinary approach ensures both complete and thorough consideration of treatment options. All patients are assigned a primary nurse to coordinate nursing care, education and discharge planning, and The Floating Hospital for Children pioneered the concept of caring for the "whole child" rather than simply treating a youngster’s illness.
Academic AffiliationsTufts-New England Medical Center is the principal teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, where all full-time Tufts-NEMC physicians hold faculty appointments. Residency programs in virtually all medical specialties are available at Tufts-NEMC, and Tufts medical students learn the latest techniques and advances in health care under the direction of Tufts-NEMC staff physicians.
ResearchThe Medical Center also has a distinguished history of achievement in scientific research and clinical advances. Tufts-NEMC research led to the discovery of drugs that prevent the body’s rejection of transplanted organs, coining the term "immunosuppression," and also brought to light the link between obesity and heart disease. Tufts-NEMC ranks among the top 10 percent of the nation’s institutions that receive federal research funds.
NumbersThe Medical Center currently has 450 licensed beds: 210 medical/surgical beds, 46 adult intensive care, 66 pediatric (including 12 pediatric psychiatric beds), 62 pediatric and neonatal intensive care, 23 post-partum, 20 adult psychiatric beds, as well as the 23 bassinets.
