Preparing for the Move

Preparation is the key to success.
-- Alexander Graham Bell (1847 - 1922)

You're the key to a successful move. Your department head should have information regarding the date and time for your move. You must be packed and ready to go by that time. Please take the opportunity to "clean house," and throw away unwanted and outdated materials as you pack.

You will be provided with an ample supply of Rent-a-Crates or Fibre Totes to be used for packing. You are responsible for packing:

  • The contents of your desk, and all desk-top items, including small calculators, staplers, tape dispensers, etc. Place smaller items such as paper clips, pens, pencils, staples, etc., in an envelope and seal it before packing them.
  • The contents of your credenza.
  • Books, magazines, catalogs, etc.
  • Lateral files MUST be emptied, and the contents packed in Rent-a-Crates and labled.
  • Storage cabinets must be emptied, and the contents packed in Rent-a-Crates and labled.
  • Basically, any item small enough to be packed in the Rent-a-Crates should be packed.
  • All Rent-a-Crates must be properly labled to allow for a cost-efficient move process.

File Cabinets

  • Vertical files, map files and chart files are moved "as is."
  • Lock the file if you have a key and keep the key with you. If you don't have a key, tightly secure all drawers with tape and tape the lock to avoid someone inadvertently locking it.
  • Lateral files must be completely emptied.

Office Machines

  • Typewriters -- secure all cords, center the carriage, and lock margins
  • Calculators -- secure all cords
  • Computer Systems -- detach all cables and secure all cords.
  • Detachable cords should be coiled and fastened securely to the machine.
  • Label all machines not packed with the appropriate location
  • The movers will move appropriate copy machines. These will be coded for destination by the Move Coordinator

White Boards -- Blackboards -- Conference Tables -- Bulletin Boards

Arrangements for moving these items including removing and reinstalling on the walls should be made by your Move Coordinators. Label these items with the correct destination.

Plants and Personal Items

  • Please hand carry all personal items, hanging and desk plants. The mover will move all oversized floor plants. Remember to tag the new location of all plants.
  • Your personal items are your own responsibility. Please note that neither the mover nor Tufts assumes any liability for damages done to personal property before, during or after the move.

Labels

  • Your Move Coordinator will distribute labels.
  • You must affix a label to every Rent-a-Crate and piece of furniture you have. Any items which have to be disaaembled must have a label on each piece, i.e., a desk with an extenstion and/or return, or computer components, etc. It is optional whether you put your name on the label. Labels MUST show your newly assigned floor and number.
  • Since many items such as desks and credenas have to be turned on end to be moved, please follow the guide to proper location of moving labels.

Visiting the Area

It is requested that NO ONE, except scheduled department move coordinators, visit the building on moving day to avoid interference with the move.

Questions

If you have any questions after reading these instructions, please ask your Move Coordinator. DO NOT wait until Move Day.
