Dr. Lauro Cavazos
Dr. Cavazos was a Dean at Tufts School of Medicine from 1975-1980. He received a BA and MA in zoology at Texas Tech University. Dr. Cavazos served as the 10th president at Texas Tech University for eight years were he made history as the first Hispanic and first graduate of the university to hold office. He was also appointed president of the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Dr. Cavazos served as Secretary of Education from 1998-1990 under both President Regan's and George W. Bush's Administrations. He was the first Hispanic American and the first Iowa State graduate to hold the nation's top education post.
Dr. Vivian Pinn
Dr. Pinn served as the Dean of Minority Affairs at Tufts School of Medicine and a professor of pathology from 1970 to 1982. Dr. Pinn left Tufts to become the third woman to chair the Department of Pathology at Howard University Medical College. In 1991, Dr. Pinn became the first black full-time director of the Office of Research on Women's Health. As the current director, Dr. Pinn ensures that women's health is at the forefront of the National Health Institute's agenda.
Dr. Floyd Atkins
Dr. Floyd Atkins served as an Associate Professor of Medicine and an Assistant Dean for Students at Tufts School of Medicine from 1985-2002. In addition, Dr. Atkins was Chief of Cardiology for 18 years at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA, which is a teaching hospital affiliated with Tufts School of Medicine. Dr. Atkins was instrumental in increasing the number of minority medical at Tufts. During his tenure at Tufts School of Medicine, Dr. Atkins was an inspiration and mentor to hundreds of medical students and doctors.
