(DIETARY INTERVENTION:
EFFECTS ON TRIGLYCERIDES
IN HIV LIPODYSTROPHY)
The Diet Study is a diet intervention for HIV-infected
individuals with elevated triglycerides.
Purpose: |
To determine the effect of a diet
intervention that is high in omega-3 fatty acids and fiber and low in glycemic index
on the metabolic
changes associated with HIV Lipodystrophy. |
Eligibility
Criteria: |
- Triglyceride > 150 mg/dL, however, < 550 mg/dL
- BMI < 27, however, > 19
- Able to participate in 3 week intensive nutrition intervention
- Able to participate in 10 week diet and follow-up visit
schedule
- Willing to return for final 6 month follow-up
- On stable antiretroviral therapy for more than 4 weeks; >= 6 months without omega-3 fatty acid supplement use
- No pre-existent treatment for diabetes
mellitus
- No pre-existent treatment for lipid disorder
- No active IV drug use

Study
Requirements: |
This study is 6 months long and includes
at least 4 outpatient visits. If you are randomized into the
intervention group, you must be able to come in to the General
Clinical Research Center everyday (Monday through Friday) for
3 weeks and then come in weekly for the next 10 weeks. |
Benefits: |
- Stipend of $500 to be distributed throughout the study’s
6 months
- Food provided if you are in the intervention group
- Omega-3 supplements
- Intensive nutritional counseling
- Detailed assessment of nutritional status, body composition,
and overall health at each study visit
