Research Studies:
The LIPID Study

(Lipid Content in HIV-Infected Persons with Insulin Resistance and Changes in Body Fat Distribution)

Purpose:

This study examines the relationship between insulin resistance and changes in body fat distribution in HIV-infected persons.

Eligibility
Criteria:

You are eligible to take part in this study if:

  1. You are HIV-infected and between 18 and 60 years of age.
  2. If receiving HAART, you must be on a stable regimen for at least 12 weeks.
  3. You have a body mass index of 18-35 kg/m2 (this will be confirmed at the screening visit)
  4. Insulin Resistance (this will be confirmed at the screening visit)
  5. Experiencing increased fat in abdomen or fat loss in arms/legs (will be confirmed through body measurements at screening)
  6. Female participants must not be pregnant.

Study
Requirements:

The study requires a screening visit (approx. 90 minutes in duration) after an overnight (8 hour) fast. This visit will involve a medical interview, blood draw, and a physical examination. If you are determined to be eligible to participate after the screening visit, you will be requested to participate in a one-time study visit. At the study visit you will undergo a 2 hour 75 gram Oral Glucose Tolerance Test and blood draws. This test involves drinking a sweet cola and having an intravenous catheter placed in your arm to measure blood glucose and insulin. Participants will also undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the body, which will focus on the muscles of the lower leg and the abdomen. This study plans to enroll up to 32 HIV-infected people at Tufts Medical Center.

Stipend:

You will receive $20 after your initial Screening Visit, and $100 after completing the Study Visit #2, which will total $120 for participation in this study.
