Research Studies:
PERTH

(Postprandial Endothelial Dysfunction after a High-Fat Meal in HIV-infected Men)

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to look at what happens to a large blood vessel in the arm after eating dietary fats in HIV-infected and HIV-negative individuals.  We are interested in determining if the reactivity of the arm artery after a high-fat meal tells us about the participants’ cardiovascular risk. Our study will examine the postprandial (anytime after a meal) effect of different dietary fat challenges on endothelial function.

Eligibility
Criteria:

  1. White men who are age >18 and known to be HIV-infected
  2. Willing to participate in the dietary challenge study
  3. Able to comply with visit schedule
  4. Able to supply informed consent
  5. Non-smoker
  6. No acute opportunistic infections or malignancy or current therapy for either
  7. Treatment-naïve or on stable antiretroviral therapy with either an efavirenz or lopinavir/ritonavir based regimen for more than 4 weeks

Study
Requirements:

This study requires two visits. The participant will be randomly placed into one of two groups and given one of two high-fat meals containing different kinds of fat. There will be a brief physical exam and lifestyle questionnaire. During the second visit, the participant will be given the other meal and the same procedures will be done.

Benefits:

The potential benefit to the participant includes information about their endothelial response to dietary fat.
