Purpose: |
The purpose of this study is to look at what happens to a large blood vessel in the arm after eating dietary fats in HIV-infected and HIV-negative individuals. We are interested in determining if the reactivity of the arm artery after a high-fat meal tells us about the participants’ cardiovascular risk. Our study will examine the postprandial (anytime after a meal) effect of different dietary fat challenges on endothelial function. |
Eligibility
Criteria: |
- White men who are age >18 and known to be HIV-infected
- Willing to participate in the dietary challenge study
- Able to comply with visit schedule
- Able to supply informed consent
- Non-smoker
- No acute opportunistic infections or malignancy or current therapy for either
- Treatment-naïve or on stable antiretroviral therapy with either an efavirenz or lopinavir/ritonavir based regimen for more than 4 weeks

Study
Requirements: |
This study requires two visits. The participant will be randomly placed into one of two groups and given one of two high-fat meals containing different kinds of fat. There will be a brief physical exam and lifestyle questionnaire. During the second visit, the participant will be given the other meal and the same procedures will be done. |
Benefits: |
The potential benefit to the participant includes information about their endothelial response to dietary fat. |
