Dr. James A. Hellinger, Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, is a physician and HIV clinical researcher active in providing clinical care for persons with HIV and developing translational, clinically-based research. His current research interests and collaborations at Tufts Medical Center and Community Medical Alliance include: 1) nutritional and metabolic changes in HIV+ and drug using populations in the US and in developing countries; 2) HIV drug metabolism and drug interactions; 3) access and disparities in health care for HIV+ and drug using populations in the US. Dr. Hellinger has extensive clinical research experience in the development of numerous antiretrovirals and other therapies for HIV+ patients. Since 1997, Dr. Hellinger has been HIV Program Medical Director for the Community Medical Alliance (CMA), a cost-capitated clinical group for persons with advanced HIV/AIDS and disabilities funded by the Division of Medical Assistance, Massachusetts MEDICAID program. CMA is a nurse practitioner-based collaborative practice for patients with advanced HIV in Boston and affiliated urban clinics throughout Massachusetts. Dr. Hellinger serves as Principle Investigator for CMA participation in the HIV-Research Network, a consortium of HIV expert sites around the USA, that provide real-time data on the status of HIV care in the US, directed by Dr. Richard Moore at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
