Study Aims: |
The purpose of the project is to increase access to methadone for recently incarcerated heroin addicts in order to reduce recidivism, improve health, and increase personal stability; and to provide linkage to treatment and preventive services.
The Objectives are:
- To set up an outreach program and a network of methadone maintenance providers for ex-offenders.
- To enroll 120 formerly incarcerated persons in methadone maintenance therapy each year for 5 years (total enrolled = 600).
- To provide linkage to testing and treatment services for co-morbid conditions of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, and mental illness.
- To conduct the required federal data collection and a local evaluation, and disseminate the results of the program.

Inclusion Criteria: |
Eligible participants must be (1) incarcerated within the previous two years; (2) opiate dependent with active heroin use or heroin use during the month preceding incarceration; (3) age 18 years or older; (4) meet the requirements for entry into methadone maintenance (i.e., one year history of opiate dependence); (5) English-, Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking; (5) plan to remain in Rhode Island for 12 months; (6) able to give informed consent. |
