Research Focus

My research interests are primarily in community-based participatory pediatric obesity prevention and public health research. My current research includes studies to investigate and address weight disparities among African American youth in Cambridge; understand relationships between fitness, fatness, and academic achievement; study the predictors of achieving physical activity recommendations; design and evaluate healthy weight interventions in communities, schools, and dental settings; and study the effects of Body Mass Index (BMI) and fitness “report cards” policies at the school- and state-level.   I am interested in drawing on the lessons learned from working both “upstream” and “downstream” to stimulate systemic change to support healthy eating and active living.  I teach the graduate-level Applied Learning Experience seminar course in the MPH program and a public health oriented Obesity course in the MD/MPH program at Tufts Medical School.
