Focus |
For the past twenty years a major portion of my worked has focused on tobacco control. Specifically in areas that have to do with involuntary exposure to second hand smoke (SHS). My work has focused both on attempts to measure second hand smoke exposure using biomarkers of exposure as well as on public policy issues related to SHS exposure. A particular interest has been the effects of SHS on workers.
In addition, I have worked on a range of public health policy issues including: Hepatitis C, environmental health policy, and asthma.
More recently my interests have focused on issues related to risk communication in and around chaos public health events e.g. anthrax, West Nile Virus, avian flu. I am especially interested in the role of health literacy and numeracy as determinants of health and as factors affecting the dissemination of information to the general public. I recently as Principal Investigator on an NIH funded research project that focused on health literacy and informed consent in clinical research studies.
A long term interest continues to be aspects of health communication related to global health issues. I have been able to work with colleagues such as Dr. Jeffrey Griffiths on his curriculum co-development projects in East Africa and elsewhere.
