Tufts Community Research Center

Description: Tufts University has a strategic, institutional wide commitment to "active citizenship" as one of its three priority themes (along with environmental/life sciences and internationalism). The emphasis that we have placed on active citizenship is rare, if not unique, at a university with a heavy research focus and raises questions about how to integrate a research program funded primarily by extramural sources with vibrant public service and active citizenship that seeks expression from virtually all corners of the university. One answer is the development of the Tufts Community Research Center as a bridge between the two areas. Our center is the in the early formative stages, however, we have a couple of dozen affiliated faculty who are already doing research with communities. We have begun a process by which community representatives can influence the form that the center eventually takes. Community collaborative projects under development include: 1) a study of patient advocates for Latinos dually diagnosed with HIV and either mental health or substance abuse problems; 2) a study of motor vehicle pollution and health along highways of some of Tufts' host communities; 3) legal and strategic planning assistance for Boston's Chinatown to address gentrification and nearby mega development that is under consideration by the city; 4) a study of energy savings and health for public housing residents; and 5) a study of obesity in public housing residents.
