MS in Pain Research, Education & Policy

Overview

The TUSM Masters of Science in Pain Research, Education and Policy (MS-PREP) is the first and only multidisciplinary master's level pain management program in the United States. The goals of the program are threefold:

RESEARCH: To teach students state-of-the-art methods for measuring the severity of pain in individuals, the burden of suffering in populations, and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions designed to alleviate acute and chronic pain. Students also study methods for evaluating the impact of cultural, socioeconomic and social factors on pain and its treatment. In addition, faculty members share their ongoing research activities with students.

EDUCATION: To leave students with a solid and extensive knowledgebase regarding all aspects of pain and its treatment, including basic science, clinical, psychosocial, economic and political implications. Students become skillful educators able to expertly communicate with patients, families, health professionals and the general public on a wide variety of pain topics.

POLICY: To move beyond research and education and provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective agents for change on behalf of chronic pain suffers unable to advocate for themselves. Students earn the authority and credentials necessary to influence policy decisions, and even craft new policies, at the organizational, state and federal levels.
