Africare:

A private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in rural Africa. It provides assistance in five principle areas: agriculture, water resource development, environmental management, health, and emergency humanitarian aid www.africare.org

American Academy of Family Physicians:

This organization has recently expanded its selection of international activities and put them on the web. www.aafp.org

AMSA:

A medical student activism organization committed to improving medical training and the nation's health.(see "International Health Opportunities) www.amsa.org/global/ih/

American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine:

Provides listings of opportunities and other info. Their journal (American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine) provides an extensive listing of overseas opportunities every three years www.astmh.org

Belize Rural Elective Program:

Part of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dept. of Family and Community Medicine, provides an opportunity to work with Maya Indians in the rainforest of southern Belize. It is designed for family practice residents and faculty in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. www.family.mcw.edu/Belize.htm

Canadian Society for International Health:

Combines many Canadian institutions involved in IH education. www.csih.org/en/links.asp

Canadian Network for International Surgery:

Promotes the delivery of essential surgical care to the underprivileged. As an educational and research agency, it conducts workshops in essential surgical skills and programs in injury prevention in African countries. www.cnis.ca/

Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief:

Directs and provides emergency relief and support in a wide variety of areas. www.cpar.ca

Child and Family Health International:

Provides placement opportunities for pre-med and med students in several locations in Ecuador, Mexico and India. Includes a student handbook with information about the sites, the country, what to expect, and other resources. www.cfhi.org

Christian Connections for International Health:

Lists contacts, placement opportunities, info on how to find a placement, and diverse resources. www.ccih.org

Cuba: Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC):

A member of IHMEC, medical and public health students go on 4-8 week clinical and fieldwork electives in Cuba, with emphasis on community/family medicine. www.medicc.org

Ecuador: Foundation for Integrated Education and Development (FUNEDESIN):

Clinical rotation program provides clinical experiences in the Amazon region of Ecuador. It is open to all levels of students and health professionals in the fields of medicine and nursing. www.funedesin.org

Fogarty International Center:

The Fogarty International Center (FIC) has a new program that provides early career opportunities for U.S. graduate students in the health professions to participate in mentored clinical research in developing countries. www.fic.nih.gov/ Due dates for the application and additional information are available on the program website at:

Global Health Education Consortium:

Provides infor about courses, curricula, annontated websites, foreign language study courses, and other materials useful for faculty and students interested in international health. Go to the "resources" section. www.globalhealth-ec.org

Global Service Corps:

Provides short or long-term opportunities to volunteer in health, education and environment projects in Kenya, Costa Rica, and Thailand. www.globalservicecorps.org

International Federation of Medical Students' Association:

An independent non-political collection of 68 medical student associations. It provides information about student clinical and research exchanges and is involved in medical, public health, and other projects. www.ifmsa.org

International Foundation for Education and Self-Help:

Provides assistance and opportunities for service much in the fashion of the US Peace Corps. The primary focus is sub-Saharan Africa. Its International Fellows program places grad students and recent college grads in 9 month internships with development-focused organizationa overseas. www.ifesh.org

International Medical Volunteers Assoc.:

There is a HUGE listing for intl. organizations accepting volunteers and interns for all health fields, conference listings, job postings, publications lists, students corner.... Take the time to really look through this site if you are thinking of going abroad now or in the future, it's worth it! www.imva.org/

MAP International:

A nonprofit Christian relief and development organization, promoting the total health of people living in the world's poorest communities. www.map.org

Massachusetts Medical Society:

Global Health information through their interest group. www.globalmedicine.org

MedicIndia:

Are you interested in putting your recently-acquired medical knowledge into practical use this summer? Are you interested in serving an underserved population? Are you interested in learning about international development and yourself? MedicIndia is a not-for-profit public service fellowship introducing first-year medical students to social service, development, hands-on-experience, and India. Each year, MedicIndia selects young professionals for a six-week summer service fellowship at the New Civic Hospital in Surat of Gujarat, India. The fellows will quickly acclimate to the new environment and, following a brief orientation, will be enveloped in a challenging and educational environment. Fellows will spend their time rotating through various specialties (including general surgery, pediatrics, rural healthcare, psychology, and various surgical branches). In addition, MedicIndia is driven by a desire to provide increased health services to a developing community. Also, the fellowship looks to expose students to the strength, people, and traditions of India.

Mexico: Iternational Alliance in Service and Education (IASE):

Offers a service learning program in the village of Tetecala, Mexico in the state of Morales. Open to students in health majors in undergraduate and graduate levels.www.iaseco.org

The Network: Towards Unity For Health

A global association of institutions for the education of health professionals committed to contribute to the improvement of health in the communities they serve. The network also has pages for student electives and a student network. www.the-networktufh.org/

Omni Med:

This is run by Dr. O'Niel at St. E's. It is an organization that runs teaching/service projects cooperatively with local health providers, currently in Belize and Kenya. www.omnimed.org

Oxfam International:

An organization working to ease poverty and hunger in more than 70 countries. www.oxfam.org/eng/index.htm

Partners of the Americas:

Network of volunteers from Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States, working together to improve the lives of people across the region. www.partners.net

Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity:

Nonsectarian group that provides multiple annual mission with the purpose of providing eye care to those in need. The organization also sets up emergency eye care clinics in disaster areas. www.vosh.org
