Mission Statement
Before GHIG, Tufts University School of Medicine lacked organization
to help its medical students do international work. And Tufts does
not lack the resources - the faculty have many international projects,
and there are sources of funding available. Therefore, the main
mission of GHIG is to organize this information in hope of getting
students abroad.
Through international work, students enrich the underserved communities
to which they travel and work, while simultaneously enriching their
personal lives. Medical students can help people lacking the most
basic medical care. Furthermore, students that have a positive international
experience early in their training are likely to be in tune to issues
of international health and are likely to engage in international
work again. In order to achieve this goal, we are:
• Informing students on prominent issues of international
health through a monthly seminar series. Past guests include Jon
Spector of Doctors Without Borders, Sue Lautze of the Feinstein
International Famine Center and Dr. Sheri Fink of International
Medical Corps and author of War Hospital.
• Promoting internships, research, clinical experiences,
rotations, and other international experiences for medical students
• Providing resources upon which medical students at TUSM
can build an international health experience. This web site is one
such resource.
• Bringing Tufts alumni to speak about their international
experiences, knowledge about global health, and especially how to
balance a career in international medicine with practical concerns
such as debt repayment and having a family.
• Providing a scholarship for students to work abroad or
domestically with related work in the area of global health. This
scholarship would be used to help defray living and/or travel expenses.
