Five singers will be joined by three instrumentalists playing medieval fiddles and harps, douçaine (an early double reed instrument), and more. A significant portion of the repertoire will be drawn from the “Chansonnier cordiforme,” a lavishly illustrated and gilded heart-shaped songbook from the latter half of the century, a spectacular facsimile of which has recently been acquired by the Lilly Music Library. Tickets for the performance are $10 for the general public, free with Tufts ID (limit one per ID). Seating is general admission. Call 617.627.3679 to reserve your tickets now.

November 6, 2009, 8PM
Osso String Quartet
Osso Performing String Arrangements of Sufjan Steven’s “Enjoy Your Rabbit”

String quartet with a modernist pulse, members of the New Work and Berlin-based Osso have collaborated and performed with an array of artists and genres, including Jay-Z, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, the New Pornographers, Antony and the Johnsons, the Polyphonic Spree, The National, Devotchka and Kanye West. Their performance of interpretations of Sufjan Steven’s eccentric electronica album Enjoy Your Rabbit – each song named for a year of the Chinese Zodiac – recomposes computer keystrokes into rhythmic classical arrangements, bridging the drama of experimental electornica, indie rock, and the nuance of chamber harmonies.

The evening will include a screening of Sufjan Steven’s ‘The BQE’, a 40-minute symphonic and cinematic exploration of the infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a major traffic artery that severed several neighborhoods and contoured waterways with the brute force of modern urban planning. Commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of their Next Wave Festival in November 2007, the film tells a quintessentially American tale through an original film by Stevens with a recorded soundtrack.

Tickets for the performance are $10 for the general public, free with Tufts ID (limit one per ID). Seating is general admission. Call 617.627.3679 to reserve your tickets now. Distler Performance Hall.
