Dear Sackler Alumni,
I know that many of you were
able to attend the 25th reunion celebration held on
October 21, 2005. It
was wonderful to see old friends and meet some of you
for the first time. The day and evening events
showcased the achievements of our alumni and students. It
was a particular pleasure to welcome Dr. Richard Sackler
back to the Sackler School and have him participate in
the reunion day.
The program for the day included
time for catching up with old friends and was filled
with activities. Our
students were well-represented by three outstanding speakers:
Kelly Beazley of the Cell, Molecular & Developmental
Biology Program and Tom Linsenmayer’s laboratory;
Peter Cheslock of the Genetics Program and Dean Dawson’s
laboratory; and Sarah Poplawski of the Biochemistry Program
and Bill Bachovchin’s laboratory.
Chandra
Mohan, our keynote speaker, taught us that the genetics
of autoimmune disease is not nearly as unfathomable as
most of us supposed. Our Career Panelists Peg AtKisson,
Neuroscience, 2002, Paul Beresford, Immunology, 1998,
Sharon Cantor, Biochemistry, 1997, Peter Carroll, Immunology,
1983, Nicole Chiravuri, Genetics, 2002, & Martha
Grossel, Molecular Microbiology, 1996, gave clear advice
and illustrated the varied ways our graduates have used
the strong training they received at Sackler. Lastly,
the skits reminded everyone that graduate school can
be a lot of fun. Will those in attendance ever
forget Genetics student Hillel Sims giving us the real
story of Brian Schaffhausen’s research on middle
T antigen?
Our day ended with a wonderful
reception at 60 State Street. Nearly 200 alumni, students, and faculty
were in attendance. Old connections were renewed
and new ones were established. The 25th reunion
will mark the year that Sackler founds its own alumni
association. You will all be hearing more about
this exciting milestone in the near future.
Please take a few minutes to
view some pictures from the reunion and if you have
not filled out the alumni
questionnaire, please take
a moment to do so. A
new, fillable pdf is available. The reunion booklet
and a larger collection of reunion photographs will be
distributed to alumni later this month.
I look forward to future events and a stronger role
for our alumni.
