When the endothelial cells in the intima are damaged, as often happens during vascular surgery, the medial SMC respond by migrating through the internal elastic lamina (IEL) into the intima and proliferating, as seen in Fig. 2. In larger arteries such as the aorta or carotid, several additional elastic laminae are present in the media.
