Fig. 15 Two animal models to study estrogen-CCN5 interactions. Normal rats have a 4-day menstrual cycle, which means that it cycles from high estrogen in proestrus to low estrogen in metestrus every 2 days. We can also ovariectomize the rat (remove the ovaries), which drops estrogen and progesterone levels to near zero within 10 days. At that time, it is possible to add back estrogen (in the form of estradiol benzoate), progesterone, or both and measure uterine CCN5 levels in response.
