Fig. 4 Heparin inhibits restenosis. Heparin, a complex carbohydrate, is capable of reducing restenosis following balloon angioplasty in the rat. The IEL in both untreated controls and animals treated with heparin are lined up and marked with arrows. Untreated controls show massive SMC hyperproliferation after 14 days as expected, whereas heparin-treated animals have far less restenosis.
