Our research focuses on the mechanism and regulation of the biosynthesis and processing of the peptide cholecystokinin (CCK). An additional focus is on the physiological role of CCK in dopamine-mediated reward and learning and memory. Cholecystokinin is an important neurotransmitter or neuromodulator that is essential for the neurochemical balance of the brain with major implications for neurological and psychiatric disease. We use a multidisciplinary approach to studying CCK biosynthesis, using neuronal and endocrine tumor cells, rat brain slices and knockout mice. Experiments using CCK microdialysis and behavioral studies in rats are elucidating the role of CCK in dopamine-mediated reward.
