My lab studies the Ras superfamily of GTPases, molecular switches that transmit extracellular signals to a variety of intracellular signaling pathways. Ras proteins play important roles in many cell functions including proliferation, differentiation, and activities associated with fully differentiated cells, such as neurons. Ras proteins have been studied intensively because a defect in their regulation contributes to the development of many types of cancer. Our focus is on Ras-regulated signaling systems that are altered in breast cancer. We also study how Ras proteins contribute to the regulation of neuron function by calcium.
