My laboratory has been interested in defining the components of the environment that influence development of sensory systems. We have been using two models: visual and olfactory. We have demonstrated that components of the extracellular matrix (the laminins) are important during development and maintenance of the visual system (in the retina), using both in vitro and in vivo models. We have also been interested in development of the olfactory system; in particular, in the generation of odorant sensitivity in olfactory sensory neurons and their projections.
