We are addressing the molecular mechanisms that determine how the nervous system is formed during embryonic development. In order to address this question, we developed a new technique called Chromophore-Assisted Laser Inactivation (CALI) to inactivate specific proteins in growing neurons. CALI has been applied to a large variety of proteins inside growth cones to ascertain their roles in growth cone motility and guidance. We have also begun to use CALI with proteins that act in cancer invasiveness to identify potential targets for anti-cancer therapeutics.
