Retinal degeneration afflicts 1 of 4,000 individuals in the United States. The degenerations are progressive, resulting in night blindness, loss of peripheral and, finally, central vision. Currently there is no treatment for the disease. Mutations have been identified in more than 40 genes. Mutations in the rod opsin gene account for ~25% of all retinal degenerations. To investigate the cellular mechanisms leading to photoreceptor cell death, our lab has produced transgenic mouse models with defects in the rod opsin and other visual genes. These mice are investigated using combined molecular biological, biochemical, histologic, and electrophysiological approaches.
