Our studies concern a number of aspects of developmental biology of the cornea and the skeletal system. In the cornea we investigate the synthesis and assembly of the components that result in a transparent structure. These studies provide a basis for fabricating an artificial cornea. We also study a mechanism we have discovered in corneal cells that prevents UV light-induced damage to DNA. These cells have virtually no tumors, possibly due in part to this mechanism. Our studies on the skeletal system involve the cellular changes that occur in the growth cartilage, a region where a number of congenital disorders occur.
