Our psychopharmacology laboratory studies brain mechanisms of aggression, anxiety, social stress, and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. We integrate behavioral, physiological, and neuropharmacological research strategies. Brain serotonin and GABA systems are the focus of studies in individuals that show excessive aggression when consuming alcohol. When repeatedly stressed, stimulant abuse becomes more intense. This stress sensitization is studied at the level of gene expression, and regulation of receptors for amines and peptides.
