We study the role of carbohydrate-binding proteins in pathogenic mechanisms of corneal wound healing and infection. Recent studies from my laboratory have suggested that specifically carbohydrate binding protiens, galectins-3 and À7, play a role in events which mediate corneal epithelial sheet migration and wound healing. We are currently investigating the mechanisms by which galectins-3 and -7 mediates corneal epithelial sheet migration and wound closure. Our goal is to delineate specific signal transduction pathways which may be modulated by galectins. In another study, we are investigating the role of a mannose-binding protein in the pathogenesis of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a sight-threatening corneal infection.
