We are interested in the biological events that make a cell a cancer cell and the biochemical consequences of protein phosphorylation. We start with murine polyomavirus, a small double-stranded DNA virus that causes a broad spectrum of tumors. Our virus studies provide leads for studying cellular signal transduction pathways. We are interested in both tumor suppressors that function to restrict cell growth as well as positive signaling molecules such as lipid and protein kinases. Our general approach is to combine genetic analysis with protein biochemistry. The range of our work extends from tumor studies to NMR structural analysis.
