EBV infection is characterized by two extreme
stages. During the acute stage of infection the virus overwhelms
the B cell compartment to the point where ~50% of all memory
B cells are infected. Over the course of 6 months this infection
resolves into a persistent state where vanishingly small numbers
of infected B cells (~1 in a million healthy cells) are permanently
present. We are gathering detailed quantitative data over
time on the levels of viremia, virus infected cells and the
immune response. By applying modern computer modeling techniques
to this data we hope to gain insights into the dynamics of
this process and how it is regulated.
