My project focuses on understanding the way
in which Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) induce
disease. Infection with STEC is an important cause of food-borne
diarrheal disease; some infected individuals develop a severe
illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome. I am using an
animal model to identify virulence factors and understand
their contribution to STEC-induced diarrhea and intestinal
inflammation.
