Application to the Program
Candidates for admission to the Graduate Program in Molecular Microbiology must have training in genetics, biochemistry, general cell biology, organic chemistry, physics, and calculus. A basic course in microbiology is desirable. Acceptance is determined by the applicant's prospects of success, as demonstrated by such criteria as academic transcripts, references and GRE General Test scores. TOEFL scores (minimum score of 550 on Written or score of 213 on Computerized), or comparable evidence of competence in English, are required of international applicants. Applications and supporting credentials are due no later than December 15; initial decisions are announced no later than April 1. Later applications are considered as they are received until the enrollment quota of the program has been filled.

MEdically-oriented Research in Graduate Education - Infectious Disease (MERGE-ID) is a track in the Molecular Microbiology Graduate Program that is specifically designed to provide strong training in basic microbiology and immunology of pathogenic organisms and host responses, as well as in-depth knowledge of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and epidemiology of infectious disease. This program is unique by integrating clinical studies and patient contact throughout the training preriod. In addition, each MERGE-ID thesis project is equally co-mentored by a basic research scientist and a clinican-scientist. The curriculum is specifically designed to provide students with strong grounding in a biomedical scientific discipline as well as the knowledge to understand the clinical implications of their work and move their discoveries to the bedside.
MERGE-ID is directed by Andrew Camilli, PhD, Professor of Molecular Biology & Microbiology and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Please contact Dr. Camilli for questions about the application process and other features of the program. For information on MERGE-ID please contact the Sackler School or visit the MERGE-ID site.
