Scientific Activities
Students and faculty from the
Program in Molecular Microbiology participate in many formal and informal
scientific meetings held in the greater Boston area. Examples include:
Seminars: In addition to the many seminars offered on the Tufts campuses,
there are multiple opportunities every day to hear about exciting research
in Cambridge (at MIT or Harvard University), Boston (at Harvard Medical
School, Harvard School of Public Health, Massachusetts General Hospital,
or Boston University Medical School), Waltham (at Brandeis University),
or Newton (at Boston College).
Boston Bacterial Meeting: Students and postdocs
from all the schools in greater Boston (and some from as far away as
northern New Hampshire) are invited to attend an annual meeting (location
varies) featuring short oral presentations, posters, and much discussion
about all aspects of bacteriology, ranging from ecology and evolution
to gene regulation to pathogenesis. See http://www.mcb.harvard.edu/losick/BBM/
Whitehead Symposium: The MIT Whitehead Institute
hosts an annual symposium in which major figures in a selected field
present their work. Open to the public. See http://www.wi.mit.edu/programs/symposium/
New England Spores Meeting: Students and postdocs
from labs working on spore-forming bacteria present their latest results
at an annual meeting attended by scientists from institutions located
throughout the Northeast. For information, contact Dr. A. L. Sonenshein
(linc.sonenshein@tufts.edu).
Yeast Club: Boston-area yeast geneticists, physiologists,
and molecular biologists meet monthly to discuss their work. For information,
contact Dr. Claire Moore (claire.moore@tufts.edu)
Bacillus Club: The labs of A. D. Grossman (MIT),
R. Losick (Harvard), S. Fisher (BU Med) and A. L. Sonenshein (Tufts Med)
meet monthly to discuss their latest results. For information, contact
Dr. A. L. Sonenshein (linc.sonenshein@tufts.edu).
Vibrio Club: The labs of A. Camilli (Tufts)
and M. Waldor (Harvard) meet
bimonthly to present and discuss their latest results [contact Dr. Matthew Waldor (mwaldor@rics.bwh.harvard.edu)
Yersinia Journal Club: Tufts labs with an interest
in pathogenic Yersinia meet monthly to discuss recent papers. For information,
contact Dr. Joan Mecsas (joan.mecsas@tufts.edu)
Legionella Journal Club: Tufts labs with an
interest in Legionella meet monthly to discuss recent papers. For information,
contact Dr. Ralph Isberg (ralph.isberg@tufts.edu).
Retrovirology Club: Boston-area scientists with
an interest in retroviruses meet three times per year at Harvard Medical
School to hear about latest results from participating labs. For information,
contact Dr. John Coffin (john.coffin@tufts.edu)
