Our lab studies the Hepatitis delta virus (HDV), a subviral agent which requires the presence of Hepatitis B virus to produce infectious virions. Chronic HDV infections often lead to a severe form of hepatitis, in which infected individuals suffer a greater risk of developing fulminant hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. HDV replication has several intriguing features. Among these are the presence of catalytic RNAs, use of RNA editing to express two proteins from a single open reading frame, and RNA templated transcription by a host polymerase.
