Activities

Friday Afternoon Tea: Hosted by the laboratory group that gives the Tuesday seminar, it is a long-standing Physiology Program tradition. Everyone gathers in the conference room at 4:00 PM to enjoy good food and drink. It is a great opportunity to talk research or simply kick-back and relax. A great way to wrap up the work week!

Program Retreat: For more than 15 years the Faculty, Staff and Students of the Physiology Program have converged upon the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA for two days of relaxation and scientific exchange. Student poster sessions, faculty-moderated panel discussions and guest seminar speakers stimulate scientific discussion in an informal atmosphere. Night-time entertainment includes student skits, mock game shows with faculty contestants and rabble-rousing until the early hours of the morning. Recreational activities are also a must and include softball, tennis, fishing or simply getting outside to enjoy the last days of summer in this scenic locale.

Holiday Party: What would the holidays be without the requisite work holiday party? Not only is the pot-luck dinner something to behold, but is worth attending for the entertainment alone! The faculty rediscover their thespian roots in the annual faculty skit and laboratory groups square off in a head-to-head competition for bragging rights in contests created by the evil minds of the office staff.

Softball Team: The Physiology Program is a force in this co-ed slow-pitch league, making it to the playoffs every year since the inception of the team. The team plays for the fun of it, everyone is welcome to join, and talent is NOT a prerequisite! The fun continues after the game when the team relocates to one of the local watering holes for dinner and celebratory beers.

Sackler Relays: The Physiology Program has shown their athletic prowess in cycling, running and volleyball in this school sponsored event to raise funds supporting student travel to scientific conferences, winning the championship two out of the past three years! Followed by a barbeque and a raffle, this is one event that is rarely missed.

Other Graduate Student Activities: Past events include continuing “tea” at one of the local drinking establishments, trips to Six-Flags in Springfield MA, weekend ski-trips to Sugar Loaf and Sunday River, and beer brewing at a local brew-your-own establishment.
