Applying to TEACRS

Applications for the TEACRS program are accepted on an annual basis. To be eligible for TEACRS, an applicant must have no more than 3 years of prior postdoctoral experience at the time an appointment is made. Most successful applicants are entering their first or second year of postdoctoral training at the time of appointment.

The application deadline is April 3 this year, but applications may be considered throughout the year if positions are available. Usually new fellows begin their training by the end of September each year. Fellows spend 75% of their time working at the bench and 25% of their time in career development activities.  Successful applicants for training positions must be American citizens or permanent residents at the time of their appointment to the program.

Applicants may apply directly to TEACRS and select their research mentor as part of the application process or they may have identified their research mentor prior to the application process.

The application packet should contain

• the application face page (pdf or word doc)

• the applicant's CV

• a one page description of past teaching experience and commitment to an academic career in research that involves teaching

• a one page description of the applicant's proposed research

• three letters of recommendation

• the mentor's NIH biosketch, including a description of the mentor's active and pending funding

• a listing of the mentor's present and prior trainees (with current position)

• a letter from the mentor stating support of the goals of the TEACRS program and agreeing to the TEACRS requirement that trainees devote 25% of their time to career development.

• a one page description of the applicant's Ph.D. research

Note that the time required for career building activities will be distributed over the entire time in the program and will not reflect a strict weekly or even monthly time apportionment.

The Executive Committee of the TEACRS program will review all applications and select fellows for appointment. Commitment to the goals of the program, strong academic and research credentials and prior experience with teaching are important criteria used in the selection process. The research and training experience of the research mentor are also considered.

Please contact the program director if you have additional questions.
