Workshops A listing of workshops available to TEACRS trainees at Tufts University for academic 2007-2008 and resources related to teaching and career development can be found below. Lab Dynamics: Managing Difficult People & Difficult Situations Dr. Carl Cohen, President, Science Management Associates and co-author of the book "Lab Dynamics: Management Skills for Scientists" Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, 2004 This workshop will provide practical tools for dealing with difficult situations and people in the scientific workplace. In the first half of the workshop we will examine circumstances in which scientists have most difficulty including: discussing authorship, receiving and giving criticism, and dealing with interpersonal conflicts in the lab. The impediments to successful management of these situations and how our own personalities and behaviors influence our ability to perform successfully under stress will be covered. Participants will learn and use practical approaches to conflict resolution and negotioation to help them manage such interactions productively. In the second half of the workshop, a framework for identifying, understanding and handling difficult people in the scientific workplace will be presented along with . We will provide concrete tools for dealing with bullying, hostility and passive-aggressive behavior. The workshop will make extensive use of role-playing exercises to illustrate the application of these tools to handling a difficult situation involving a Chairperson or PI, a colleague in the department or laboratory, a postdoctoral fellow or student. By the end of the session, participants will be better prepared to handle problems in their own laboratory and/or with their superiors and peers. They will also have begun to build skills associated with effective leadership. The workshop is appropriate for scientists at all levels, from post-docs to experienced laboratory leaders. It is designed to benefit scientists who are in managerial positions, those who want to improve their skills in order to assume positions of leadership, and those who simply want to learn how to deal with difficult people and situations. Tufts Conference on Teaching and Learning This presentation is offered through the Tufts Center for Learning and Teaching (CELT). The keynote speaker will be Richard Kadison, M.D., Chief, Mental Health Services, Harvard University Health Services and author of "College of the Overwhelmed: The Campus Mental Health Crisis and What to Do About It." His talk will be followed by interactive teaching and technical skills workshops. Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning with Technology The Summer Institute focuses on technologies that support learning in the classroom. It is designed to help participants think about their students' learning goals and how technology might be used to attain these goals. Attendees engage in a week of seminars, discussions and hands-on technology workshops to learn and explore effective methods for integrating technology into their teaching, to develop assessment measures to evaluate the use of these tecnologies in the classroom, and to share and model pedagogically effective uses of technology with their colleagues. In addition to this information and training, each attendee receives: an intstitue workbook with resources; AT staff assistance with instructional design decisions, media and technology choices, and course material transformation; and a venue for sharing final results and lessons learned to the Tufts community. Spring Mentoring Workshop Series These workshops will focus on developing mentoring skills and a mentoring philosophy, the responsibilities of mentors and mentees, and on finding the mentors needed at different stages of one's career. Job Hunting Workshop The goals of this workshop are to learn to prepare and critique a CV, prepare and critique a statement of teaching philosophy and teaching protfolios, and prepare and critique a statement of research interests. The workshop will also cover how these different components can be targeted to particular job opportunities. Graduate Institute for Teaching The Summer Institute on Teaching is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are interested in becoming college-level faculty. It is a three-week intensive of specialized workshops on pedagogy. Topics include:
National Events Academic Employment Initiative (AEI) This activity is held during the ACS National Meeting. Candidates seeking faculty poisitions present posters about their current research that will also expand on their researach interests, teaching philosophy and experience. Faculty recruiters are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to meet as many candidates as possible. Case Studies in Science Summer Workshop This workshop focuses on training faculty teachers using a case study method. Cases are developed in the first part of the workshop and implemented at the end of the workshop. This program is sponsored by the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science, an organization that provides various types of support and instruction in science teaching and serves as a resource center for case-based study of science education. ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators This is an interactive three day conference on effective teaching strategies. Each year, the conference attracts apporximately 280 microbiology and biology educators. The conference program includes plenary, poster and exhibit sessions. Participants engage in formal and informal small group discussions between colleagues focused on the same goal: to improve teaching and learning the biological sciences. 2008 IRACDA National Conference National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology This summer teaching institute is co-sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and has a focus on research and active learning designed to help participants develop unique learning materials. ASM Kadner Institutee A one-week, intensive, hands-on training experience in grantsmanship, scientific presentations, and teaching is offered. Sessions also address career opportunities in the microbiological sciences and scientific ethics. National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI) A teaching workshop is held in conjunction with the annual meeting of American Society of Engineering Education. This workshop is open to individuals with one year of teaching experience. Workshops on Classroom Management These workshops occur throughout the year at different locations and are designed to especially help those new to teaching navigate the challenges of the classroom.
