• Glossary of Outreach and Engagement Terminology in Higher Education -- Produced by the John D. Gerhadt Center at the American University in Cairo.

• Higher Education as a Force for Societal Change in the 21st Century -- A speech delivered by Brenda Gourley, Vice Chancellor of the Open University (UK) at the Campus Engage International Conference in June 2009. She discusses four ways in which universities can actively pursue civic engagement in a comprehensive way.

• New Times Demand New Scholarship: A Leadership Agenda for Research Universities and Civic Engagement (PDF document) -- A 2005 conference report from Campus Compact and the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University.

• Practical Tools for Overcoming the Challenges of Advancing Your Career as a Community-engaged Scholar -- This essay by Cathy Jordan of the University of Minnesota reviews the challenges, in terms of developing skills, securing recognition for community-engaged scholarly work, and particularly in successfully navigating the promotion and tenure (P and T) system.
  

• Real World, Real People: A Purpose Beyond Ourselves in the 21st century -- A paper presented by Brenda Gourley, Vice Chancellor of the Open University (UK) and Chair of the Global Project on Literacy, at the International Association of Universities 13th General Conference. Vice Chancellor Gourley argues that universities must mobilize their resources in response to today's societal challenges, and mentions the role of the Talloires Network in that mobilization.

• Campus Compact Resources -- Designed to provide key information to those seeking to create, expand, or improve campus programs focusing on service, service-learning, or civic engagement. Resources here range from service-learning syllabi to information on the Federal Work-Study community service requirement.

• Good Practice Guide and Self-evaluation Instruments for Managing the Quality of Service-Learning -- The Council on Higher Education and Higher Education Quality Committee in South Africa developed this guide, which includes instruments for all levels of implementation and practice.

• Sample Service-Learning Evaluation Tools -- University of the Free State (South Africa) created these questionnaires for students and community partners.
  

• Self-Assessment Tool for Service-Learning Sustainability -- Campus Community Partnerships for Health developed this tool to help assess the institutionalization of service-learning at universities.

• Service-Learning in the Curriculum: A Resource for Higher Education Institutions -- The Council on Higher Education in South Africa offers a model for integrating service-learning into the curriculum, as well as evaluation tools and other resources.
  

• Shumer's Self-Assessment for Service-Learning -- Rob Shumer with the Center for Experiential and Service Learning at the University of Minnesota published this tool in December 2000 to help universities assess their service-learning programs.

Responding to Community Issues

• Achieving the Promise of Authentic Community-Higher Education Partnerships -- A 2007 paper by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health which advocates partnerships between institutions of higher education and their surrounding communities.

• Developing University-Community Partnerships to Support African Refugees in Greater Western Sydney -- A 2007 article by Professor Margaret Vickers, Associate Dean (Engagement) of the University of Western Sydney.

• Expanding the field of Inquiry: A cross-country study of Higher Education Institutions’ responses to HIV and AIDS -- This UNESCO report from 2006 is this first to document, at a global level, the response of higher education institutions to the AIDS epidemic. The accounts shed much light on the stance that universities in various parts of the world have adopted when confronted with HIV and AIDS.

• “The Community Voice on Service-Learning: A Good Practice Guide for Higher Education” -- An article by the Director of Community Engagement at Rhodes University, Dr. N.J. Nduna. She recommends that higher education officials listen to the voice of community to ensure improved service-learning practices.

• Jenzabar Foundation -- This foundation issues grants to institutions of higher education in support of service-based student activities.

• Higher Education for Development -- This program affiliated with USAID provides funding for partnerships between US and international universities around development issues.

• Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation - A Foundation whose mission is to foster campus-community partnerships for academic service and learning. The Foundation offers several monetary awards for higher education civic engagement, including the Campus Community Parternship Award and the Community Academic Service Entrepreneur Award (CASE)
