General

  • Managing Civic and Community Engagement -- A book by David Watson which provides key reading for people interested in equity and diversity in higher education, including those studying aspects of higher education management, as well as professionals and policy makers in the field.
  • Real World, Real People: A Purpose Beyond Ourselves in the 21st century -- A paper presented by Brenda Gourley, Vice Chancellor of the Open University (UK) and Chair of the Global Project on Literacy, at the International Association of Universities 13th General Conference. Vice Chancellor Gourley argues that universities must mobilize their resources in response to today's societal challenges, and mentions the role of the Talloires Network in that mobilization.
  • Service Learning articles -- A collection of papers and publications on a variety of service-learning topics, found on the University of the Free State's Service Learning division's website.
  • Service-Learning Research Capacity Hub -- This research hub, organized by Learn and Serve America, provides resources, highlights known and emerging scholars, builds capacity to conduct and publish research, disseminates information, and secures external funding.
  • State of Service-Learning Research -- A 2003 academic article from The Generator on the history of service-learning research trends. Includes descriptions of promising research methods, models, and areas for new research.

  • Campus Compact Resources -- Designed to provide key information to those seeking to create, expand, or improve campus programs focusing on service, service-learning, or civic engagement. Resources here range from service-learning syllabi to information on the Federal Work-Study community service requirement.
  • Shumer's Self-Assessment for Service-Learning -- Rob Shumer with the Center for Experiential and Service Learning at the University of Minnesota published this tool in December 2000 to help universities assess their service-learning programs.
  • Strategies for Creating an Engaged Campus: An Advanced Service-Learning Toolkit for Academic Leaders -- This site from the US university network Campus Compact is designed for college and university presidents, provosts, chief academic officers, and deans who wish to deepen the civic education of their students and to increase the engagement of their institutions with their local communities. Funding Sources

  • Jenzabar Foundation -- This foundation issues grants to institutions of higher education in support of service-based student activities.

  • Higher Education for Development -- This program affiliated with USAID provides funding for partnerships between US and international universities around development issues.
  • Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation - A Foundation whose mission is to foster campus-community partnerships for academic service and learning. The Foundation offers several monetary awards for higher education civic engagement, including the Campus Community Parternship Award and the Community Academic Service Entrepreneur Award (CASE)
