Eligibility Policy
for Information Technology at Tufts University
Who is eligible for Information Technology
services at Tufts?
Authorized Tufts Community
All Tufts University matriculated
students and faculty or staff employed by Tufts University are eligible
for all core information technology services in accordance with
the University's Information Technology Responsible
Use Policy. Specialized information technology services
may require authorization, approval, or separate registration as
required by the administrating unit. The authorized Tufts community
includes:

- Temporary appointments*
- Visiting or adjunct status*
- Research and clinical faculty and associates
working at Tufts but paid from external funds*
- Emeritus status*

- Full and part-time regular employees
- Temporary employees*
- Teaching and research assistants*

* Will need to be verified in a standardized
reporting format such as an authorized school or departmental database
report or authorization form/letter from a dean or department head.
Limited Eligibility
Limited eligibility for email service
will be offered upon application to alumni, parents of enrolled
students, Friends of Tufts, the Trustees of Tufts and Tufts Overseers
in accordance with the University's Responsible Use Policy.
Other individuals may request limited services
to other information technology services with authorization from
a sponsoring faculty or department such as visiting scholars, consultants
performing work for Tufts, and Conference Bureau registrants. This
authorization must be in accordance with policies and other restrictions
as defined by the administrating unit of the service.
What Information Technology Services
are available at Tufts?
Core Information Technology Services
Core information technology services
include a limited amount of disk storage and user accounts as needed
for the service required. Core information technology services include
but are not limited to:
- Email services including directory, listprocs,
and news groups
- Web page authoring and storage
- Standard Internet services including Web,
Telnet, and FTP
- Use of computer labs (these are run by
the schools within Tufts and are subject to policies set by the
administering unit).
- Use of licensed software packages and
databases.
- Electronic library services including
access to databases and resources restricted to the Tufts community
(subject to the policies of each of the Tufts libraries, database
license terms, and copyright laws).
- Access from off campus to Tufts IT services
Specialized Information Technology Services
Specialized information technology
services are available to anyone in the Tufts community who has
demonstrated need for the service. Some services may only be made
available to those who are authorized due to the nature of their
work. All of these services require separate application to the
system administrator and may require signed authorization from a
department head or chair.
- Academic and research systems and databases
such as SAS and Human Genome System.
- Shell access to host machines
- Administrative systems such as Student
Information System, Human Resources System, etc.
- Library systems for database maintenance
purposes.
Implementation and Revisions
Tufts Computing and Communications Services (TCCS) is responsible
for implementation and enforcement of this policy. The Information
Technology Council (ITC) will oversee necessary updates and changes
to this policy, usually by assignment to the ITC Academic Affairs
Subcommittee or the ITC Ad Hoc Policy Oversight Committee. Proposed
changes will be developed by the ITC and/or its designated committee(s)
in consultation with TCCS and authorized representatives of the
affected constituencies including as appropriate: Development, Student
Deans and Faculty Deans in each school, University Library Counsel,
General Counsel, Human Resources, and the Assistant Provost. The
Provost has authority to arbitrate disagreements on policy changes
and has final authority to approve changes, except that the Executive
Vice President must approve changes in eligibility that affects
administrative personnel.
