Emerald Guide - Oveview

What is Emerald?

Emerald is primarily a communications server which provides user Web pages, text-based access to Usenet news, and shell services for terminal-oriented and network clients. The latest Emerald is a Compaq Alphaserver ES40, running Tru64 Unix .


UNIX


The operating system Emerald runs is called UNIX. Besides the above programs, there are a few UNIX commands you should be familiar with. Click here to read more about basic UNIX commands.

How do I apply for an account on Emerald?

Accounts on Emerald are available for all registered students, faculty, and staff at Tufts University. To obtain an account:

  • Medford campus:
    Contact the University IT Support Center at x7-3376 or by email at uitsc@tufts.edu for further assistance.

  • Boston campus:
    Present your Tufts ID during normal business hours at the Health Sciences Library 5th floor Learning Resources Center Helpdesk.

  • Grafton campus:
    Present your Tufts ID at the Veterinary Library during normal business hours.
