Emerald Guide - Web Hosting

What do I need to publish a web page on www.tufts.edu?

1. An account on the computer named emerald.tufts.edu
2. An application to write the web page(s) you want to publish
3. A way to get the web pages uploaded to Emerald

NOTE: Some schools and departments may have existing preferred procedures for publishing web materials. Please contact your department or school webmaster to verify this.

Selecting An Application

You can create your page(s) on your own PC or Mac, or directly on Emerald itself. There are many web page authoring tools. Some commercial products, like Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage, try to make web page editing and creation as easy as using a word processor. Most word processors and many other applications, such as Microsoft Word, Claris Appleworks, and Microsoft PowerPoint also allow you to create web pages. Finally, if you have knowledge of HTML, you can create pages using any simple text editor (Windows Notepad, Macintosh Simpletext, etc). Many simple editors, such as Adobe Homesite for Windows and BBEdit for the Mac, also have enhancements to make writing HTML easier.

There are several editors installed on Emerald itself, but if you are unfamiliar with UNIX, you may prefer one of the desktop programs listed above. Editors on emerald include Pico, Emacs, VI, and Ed. Most Emerald webmasters at Tufts use Dreamweaver 8.

Getting Your Web Pages Uploaded to Emerald

Once you create your page(s), you need to place it in your public_html folder, located directly off of your home folder on Emerald. You can upload your page using any SFTP client. The UIT Training and Documentation department has prepared a short document that steps through the configuration settings for Dreamweaver to upload files directly to Emerald using the SFTP protocol. Click here to view or save a copy of the document. The Transferring Files page in the Emerald Guide, located within this web site, includes additional file transfer options and documentation including the use of vcp.exe and WinSCP.

What Is Your Web Address?

If you named your home page index.html (recommended), your web site can be accessed at: http://www.tufts.edu/~username, where username refers to your Emerald username. For example, if your username is jsmith01, your web site location is: http://www.tufts.edu/~jsmith01.

If you named your home page anything other than index.html (e.g. mypage.html) then your address will be http://www.tufts.edu/~username/nameofyourhomepage.html.
Example: http://www.tufts.edu/~jsmith01/mypage.html

Space Allocation

By default, users are allocated five megabytes of "home folder" personal web space on Emerald. Note that if you're planning to develop pages for a department, organization, or for course work, please speak with either the Student Activities office or the relevant department about using space on their sites.
Additional space can be requested by contacting the UITSC at 617-627-3376 or email to uitsc@tufts.edu.

Adding Your Web Page to the Online Directory

Tufts maintains an online directory, called the White Pages, of all registered students, staff, and faculty. If you choose, you may have the directory display your email address and web page location. Click here to view the White Pages or make changes to your listing. for more information.

File Protection Commands

So that everyone may view your home page, your public_html directory must have the proper UNIX permissions. While safeguarding your other directories and files, the following commands issued from the Emerald prompt in your home directory will accomplish this.

At the Emerald prompt type:
chmod 711 ~
chmod 755 ~/public_html
chmod -R a+r ~/public_html/*
Press after each of the above commands and remember that UNIX is case sensitive.
