Mystic Watershed Collaborative Partners
The Mystic Watershed Collaborative (MWC) is a partnership between Tufts University and the
Mystic Watershed Association (MyRWA). The Mystic Watershed
Collaborative was created in 2000 with strong
administrative support "to strategically link academic research and student learning with
real-world challenges and to give priority to issues and concerns raised by citizens of the
watershed community, particularly problems and actions that are likely to benefit from cooperation
between Tufts University and citizen groups". The Mystic Watershed Collaborative is guided by a
commitment to improve environmental justice and equity of access to resources in the watershed.
A MWC Steering Committee is comprised of MyRWA staff and representatives of member organizations
(e.g. Friends of the Mystic River); MA Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, and affiliates
and students at Tufts. These individuals meet regularly and work together to set the Collaborative
priorities and to implement plans. The Mystic Watershed Collaborative communicates focus areas and
events through networks of watershed stakeholders and a monthly electronic newsletter,
Action in the Mystic.
Tufts' Departmental or Organizational Roles
Various departments at Tufts have supported the Collaborative since its infancy. The WaterSHED
Center helped significantly to initiate the partnership and has provided financial support,
particularly for the River Institute. Tufts Institute of the Environment has provided staff
assistance and office space and support for MWC consultants and students, as well as housing
MA Water Watch at Tufts. The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service has provided
financial, staff, and student support to MWC activities. Other active partners have included:
Center for Interdisciplinary Studies
The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS)
functions as an essential site and mechanism on the
Tufts campus through and across which facilitation of interdisciplinary work occurs. The
institutional structure provided by CIS encourages and initiates multidisciplinary dialogue
and practicums necessary to the nurturance of new approaches to curriculum, pedagogy,
research and outreach. Moreover, as ever-increasing interdisciplinary aims and innovations
continue to thrive, and newly coalesce as programs, CIS provides the unifying administration
and leadership that drives the interdisciplinary impulse at Tufts.
Student Representatives
Tufts students serve on the Steering Committee to help tie collaborative efforts into the student
body. These students assist with outreach and education and work on select priority projects
to engage more students.
Tufts Institute of the Environment
Tufts Institute for the Environment (TIE)
is an interdisciplinary, university-wide education
and research institute which facilitates and coordinates environmental programs at the University.
TIE is devoted to advancing and disseminating knowledge about the many ways human interactions
affect the environment. TIE focuses its activities on environmental research, technology, policy
development, and education to improve environmental quality as it relates to human health.
Tufts University is deeply concerned about the unprecedented scale and speed of environmental
pollution and degradation, and the depletion of natural resources and is a signatory to the
Talloires Declaration.
Tufts Mystic Water Watch
Tufts Mystic Water Watch
is a student organization here at Tufts, working to strengthen connections between Tufts
University and community organizations of the Mystic River watershed through educational
programs, clean-ups, and observational studies to improve recreational opportunities and
watershed health.
Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service
The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service
is a university-wide initiative to make
the values and skills of active citizenship a hallmark of a Tufts University education. The
mission is to ensure that students graduate from Tufts University prepared to be committed
public citizens and leaders who take an active role in building stronger communities and
societies. Strategic intent is to catalyze civic engagement and community building by identifying,
generating, and supporting Tufts students, faculty, staff and alumni and community partners who
develop creative, effective approaches to active citizenship at the university and in communities
around the world.
To achieve the Tisch College mission, Tufts University must be an active citizen, using
institutional knowledge and resources to work with local communities to address community-defined
issues and, in turn integrating this experience into the education process at Tufts. The Lincoln
Filene Center for Community Partnerships strives to nurture Tufts citizenship, by finding new ways
to make the relationship between the institution and community more meaningful and sustainable.
Urban & Environmental Policy and Planning
The Tufts University Department of Urban and Environmental
Policy and Planning (UEP) offers graduate
public policy programs, culminating in either a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree or a Master of Public
Policy (M.P.P.) degree. The programs prepare public spirited individuals for careers in government,
nonprofit organizations, citizen advocacy groups, and the private sector. The department goal is
to educate a new generation of leaders -- "practical visionaries" -- who will contribute to
solving key public problems by making institutions more responsive to the social and economic
needs of communities and by moving toward the sustainable management of environmental resources.
Since 1973, when the M.A. program was founded, UEP has been committed to addressing urban, social,
and environmental concerns of communities. Seeing the linkages between these areas, and analyzing
their interactions in our land and cityscapes is a hallmark of a UEP education and it reflects our
core values. These are: that we should strive to increase the quality of human life; that this
should be done in a just and equitable manner; and that it should be done while respecting the
limits of supporting ecosystems. These values cut across our concentrations and reflect the need
for society to move towards more sustainable forms of development, and ultimately, towards
sustainable communities.
University Relations
The Office of the Vice President for University
Relations oversees the community relations,
publications, public relations, web presence, legal affairs, and government affairs of Tufts
University. The Office of Community Relations serves as the liaison between the neighboring
communities and the University.
Water: Systems, Science, and Society (WSSS)
The Water: Systems, Science, and Society (WSSS) Ph.D. and MA/MS Program was developed to provide multidisciplinary
perspectives and tools to manage water related problems. Research is organized around six areas: Water, Climate and
Environment Change; Water and Public Health; Water Pollution and Remediation Science; Watershed Management; Water,
Food and Livelihood Security; and Water and National and International Security.
