Chicago Climate Exchange

Tufts University is a founding member of the Chicago Climate Exchange and was the first university member. Tufts is committed to finding novel solutions to dealing with global climate change, and our relationship with CCX reflects that.

The Chicago Climate Exchange ® (CCX®) is North America's only legally binding multi-sectoral, rule-based and integrated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission registry, reduction and trading system. Emissions trading is a globally recognized tool for cost-effectively reducing GHGs.

In Phase I, CCX Members commit to reduce GHG emissions 1% per year from 2003 through 2006, below the average of the baseline period of 1998-2001. Members that surpass this goal may have emissions allowances to sell. Members that do not meet this goal must buy allowances to come into compliance, or purchase project-based offsets. Phase II of the program will run from 2007-2010.
