Front-of-the-house Composting in the Campus Center April 6-24, 2009

The test is over; please check back for a summary of the results which will be uploaded in the next few weeks (after the pandemonium of move-out and commencement!).

Thank you to all of the volunteers that made it possible!

About

Due to strong student interest, Tufts Dining, in cooperation with Tufts Recycles! and the Office of Sustainability have colaborated to test out a composting program for campus center customers. During the three week test the bin was open from 11-2pm Monday-Friday.

Why?

The purpose of the test is to learn whether Tufts students will use the program, and use it correctly. Our experience has been that every composting event we have had, people are confused and the material is regularly contaminated. Composting must have ZERO contamination or else the processors will not take it. We look forward to your participation and feedback.

What is composting?

Wikipedia has a great entry on composting. We suggest that you check it out to learn more about the process. Click here to be directed to the page.

The food collected at the campus center will be picked up by Save That Stuff and brought to Rocky Hill Farm in Saugus MA.

Tufts Dining already composts leftovers (that cannot be donated) and cooking scraps from the Campus Center kitchen, Dewick McPhee and Carmichael. Click here to learn more.

What do you think?

Please email recycle@tufts.edu with feedback or to ask questions.

A big thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who have signed up to monitor the bin!!
