Greenbean Reverse Vending Machines Greenbean is a new company that retrofits reverse vending machines (where people can get $.05 back for containers) with a wireless application that facilitates an instant financial transaction and a social media stream. A person can go to the website and easily make a profile using a phone number as a unique identifier. At the machine, all of the deposit money from the container will either go directly into a paypal account or to a charity/cause of choice. Resources saved [such as energy, water, etc.] from recycling will be tracked on the website. The machine will be in the campus center. Only two schools in the Boston area are participating in the pilot test- Tufts and MIT. Greenbean is likely to be a very successful venture someday and Tufts will be proud to have been one of the original launch sites. Data collected during the pilot test will be used as a case study as Greenbean expands. (Greenbean was a finalist in MassChallenge).
Beach Cleanup 2010 The Ocean Conservancy's 25th Annual beach cleanup is approaching! Each year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers around the world dedicate a few hours to cleaning our beaches. Last year's cleanup removed 7.4 million pounds of debris in over 100 countries. This September, come be a part of a global cleanup! For more information, click here.
Educating Our Custodians Custodian education is a vital part of the recycling program. Since the custodians are responsible for collecting all the recycling from campus buildings, it is important that they are well-informed about the recycling effort.
Each year, Dawn Quirk, the recycling coordinator, meets with all the custodians on each Tufts campus to talk about recycling. In these annual education sessions they discuss why recycling is important, the role that the custodians play in the process, how and when to collect recycling, and what to do if various problems arise. Information is also provided regarding different recycling initiatives taking place at Tufts, and the role that the custodians play in each of them. All of the education material is in Spanish as well as in English. Click here to see the presentation that was given to the Boston people on 8/19/2010.
